How an ACAT can help
Maybe you’re wondering why you need to go through the process of being assessed. What’s the point and how does it benefit you?
How an ACAT can help
For information about care needs call 1800 200 422, but for more complex needs or entry into an aged care home you will need to talk to an Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT, or ACAS in Victoria) (more information). There are many aged care services available across Australia and you have a lot of different choices. Members of ACATs have experience with the system and can help you make the best decisions for your future. An ACAT can help in a number of ways. They can help you:
- decide if you’ll be able to continue living at home with home help or if you should consider moving into an aged care home
- by providing information about aged care homes and home care services available in your area
- by approving your application for a place in an aged care home or by organising and approving care and support services at home, and
- by arranging short-term care, such as respite care (more information), so you or your carer can take a break.

When making an assessment, the ACAT members will look at all aspects of your situation and consider your medical, physical, psychological and social needs.Read more: About how long an ACAT approval lasts
