Aged Care Act 1997
Community care (more information)
Aged care service providers must comply with their obligations under the Aged Care Act 1997. If you are eligible to receive services from an approved provider (more information) under this Act, those services must meet Australian Government standards. As a care recipient, you have the right:
- to receive good quality care and services
- to be treated with respect and courtesy
- to have your lifestyle and cultural and personal beliefs respected
- to be informed and consulted about your care
- to privacy and confidentiality
- to access your personal information held by the provider
- to be provided with a written plan of the services you will receive
- to have another person of your choice support you and advocate on your behalf
- to have your comments valued
- to make a complaint if you are unhappy with the services your receive, and
- to continue to receive care and services from the provider while they are still necessary and appropriate to meet your needs.
Aged care homes
Aged care homes must be accredited under the Accreditation Standards for Residential Aged Care in order to receive subsidies from the Australian Government. The standards cover such things as management, care, lifestyle, quality and safety issues.
