Financial support

There are two types of Centrelink payments that carers may be able to access: the Carer Allowance (more information) and the Carer Payment (more information).

Legal support

Some carers feel they’re unable to make decisions about the personal affairs of the person they’re caring for. Ordinarily, if this happens, family and friends can help informally, by discussing the decisions with you. But some decisions can only be made by someone with the legal authority to do so.

Rights and responsibilities

All service providers must comply with certain agreed standards in the delivery of their services and how they treat the person you care for. They also have a responsibility to make sure that your family member knows what their rights are.
