Chronic diseases - help for families, friends and carers
Carers, family members and friends of people with a chronic illness can learn more about the condition, find out how they can help, or obtain help for themselves (such as respite care (more information)) through a range of Australian Government services.
Contact 1800 200 422 for information on Australian Government-funded community care and aged care homes. You can ask about services in your region.
A network of Commonwealth Respite and Carelink Centres across Australia focuses on helping you, the carer, with the many aspects of respite care, including the sometimes difficult decision to use respite care. They will help you to understand the different types of respite care available, discuss the most appropriate form of Respite for you, and work with you to arrange it.
Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS)
You can contact the TIS on 13 14 50 if you need assistance in a language other than English. They will connect you to the Commonwealth Respite and Carelink Centre or other service you require, and will interpret for you.Read more: Useful contacts for chronic diseases
