How to find a home
Moving into an aged care home is a big step. The good news is that there are many sources of advice and information, including contact details of homes that might suit you.
When an Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT or ACAS in Victoria) (more information) has assessed you as needing to enter an aged care home, Commonwealth Carelink Centres (more information) or ACATs can provide you with information about aged care homes in your area, and the types of services they offer.
You need to find a suitable aged care home that:
- has a vacancy, and
- is able to provide you with the type of care you need.
It’s a good idea to apply to several suitable homes available in the area in which you wish to live to make sure that you’re not dependent on finding a vacancy in only one or two homes. You can apply to as many aged care homes as you wish.
‘Suitable’ means homes that will meet your particular care needs, and that you choose because you would prefer to live in them. It might be because they are close to family and friends, or have a pleasant atmosphere, or a combination of factors that lead you to choose which particular homes to apply to.

How do I know if an aged care home is suitable for me?
Choose a home that meets your individual needs. If you are able to visit a number of homes, or if you or a carer or family member contacts some homes that might be suitable, feel free to ask as many questions as you need to help you decide if a home will meet your individual preferences and needs.
We have provided a checklist to help you choose questions to ask the management of the various homes you consider.
