Where to start

Related health care services

There is a range of related health care services or ‘allied health services’ that can help you with your rehabilitation after an illness or fall. You can find out more about these different services by scrolling down the list below.


Physiotherapy

Physiotherapists are university-trained professionals who can help you restore proper functioning of the body after disease or injury. They use manual therapies such as massage as well as specific therapeutic exercise programs, and other electrotherapy techniques such as ultrasound and laser therapy.

Speech therapy

Speech therapists or pathologists help with speech and hearing problems, as well as the use and understanding of language, reading, writing and problems such as eating, drinking and swallowing. This type of therapy is ideal for people who have had a stroke or an accident that affected their brain.

Podiatry

Podiatrists treat the feet and any problems associated with them. They also help you find shoes that are safe and comfortable and can create customised shoe inserts to align your feet and prevent discomfort and pain in the feet, knees and hips while walking.

Counselling

There may be instances when you or the person you care for will need counselling in relation to drug or alcohol problems, depression, mood changes and behaviour or bereavement. If so, there are many people you can talk to for help, so don’t be afraid to ask for it.

Occupational therapy

Occupational therapists help people who have had injuries or other illnesses overcome a variety of physical or emotional problems so that they can live more independent lives. Their job is to suggest changes to your environment that will make things easier and to work with other health professionals to maximise your living skills and help you enjoy a better quality of life.

Day Therapy Centres

Day therapy centres provide a wide range of rehabilitation and therapy services such as physiotherapy, occupational and speech therapy, podiatry and other therapies. To access these services at a day therapy centre you need to be referred by your doctor, a health or community care practitioner or an aged care home.

Regional health services

The government has introduced a new Regional Health Services Program to help small rural communities with a population of approximately 5000 people to expand their local primary health care services. This program helps provide improved access to a flexible range of health services, and is based on an understanding that no two communities are alike.
