Standards of care in aged care homes

Australia’s aged care system aims to ensure that all older people receive support and quality care when they need it. Government-funded aged care homes are owned and operated by people or organisations that have official approval to care for people. The government makes sure these homes meet high standards of accommodation and of care, and that the rights of their residents are protected.

The government monitors the quality of care and services provided in aged care homes in a number of ways. Homes have to meet accreditation standards (more information) and to show continuous improvement in the quality of care and services they provide to residents.

The Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency Ltd assesses homes and monitors them to make sure they comply with the standards. You can ask an aged care home for details of its accreditation status (more information).

The Department of Health and Ageing may impose sanctions  (more information) on aged care homes that have not met requirements under the Aged Care Act 1997. In these cases, information is published on the Department’s website. When you search for a home on the Aged Care Home Finder, you will also be able to see if a home has a sanction in place.
