Thinking ahead
Some carers find it difficult to think too far ahead. They feel that planning for illness and death may seem morbid, or be inviting bad luck. Also, when you’re already busy with the many demands of caring it may seem like a lot of extra work.
It’s worth it though. Once arrangements are made you will have some sense of security and peace of mind about the future. Planning ahead may also help you avoid difficult situations in the future, especially if there’s a crisis or emergency.

Getting affairs in order
Even though it may be hard to discuss the future with an older person, there are many issues that are best raised early on, with all those concerned being involved. Some of the things that you may wish to discuss include:
- making a will
- choosing an aged care home, and
- the location of important documents.
