What can I bring?
Your aged care home will provide most of the furniture and furnishings you need including beds, curtains and carpets. Ask the home what you can bring with you, as each home has its own guidelines on personal belongings.
Some examples of belongings that people might bring are a favourite chair, a television, video player, radio, CD player, a bedside light or small table, and videos, books and music.
You can ask to see the room you will be moving into so that you know what might fit in comfortably.
Before bringing your own electrical goods into the aged care home you may be asked to have them checked by an electrician, for safety reasons. Most homes require regular safety checks for electrical items. These safety checks are usually at the resident’s cost, but as homes have different requirements and practices around electrical goods, ask about this before you move in.
Ask your home about insurance of your valuables.
The home might ask you to put name labels on your clothes if they are to be washed by staff. You might prefer to label them in any case. You can do this yourself, or the home may offer a labelling service for which you would be charged.
If you have queries about what you can bring with you, you could ask the home as there are differences between homes. For general information, you may wish to contact the Aged Care Information Line (more information) on 1800 500 853.
