Your assessment
An assessment is a consultation with one or more members of your local Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT or ACAS in Victoria) (more information). Once an appointment has been made with the ACAT, a professional person or persons from the team, such as a nurse or doctor, will come and talk to you about how well you’re coping in your day-to-day life.
They’ll ask you questions about your general health – questions that are designed to work out how much help you need with daily and personal activities, and to determine which care solutions best suit your needs. The team may also, with your approval, request information about your medical history from your doctor.
After the discussion your ACAT visitor(s) will explain the assessment results with you and will tell you about the services available in your area that can help. They’ll also let you know what they believe is the best type of care to suit your particular needs.
