Common question

Question: I receive a pension from Centrelink, currently live in my own home and need to enter an aged care home to receive high level (nursing home) care. How much can I be asked to pay?
Answer: You can be asked to pay a basic daily fee. If you receive a full pension, you cannot be asked to pay an additional income tested fee. You can be asked to pay an accommodation charge depending on your assets. In relation to paying the accommodation charge, if you have a spouse, or a dependent child or, a carer/close family member living in your home for certain periods of time who is eligible for a Centrelink or Veterans’ Affairs means tested pension, then the value of the home is excluded when calculating your total assets.
