Help staying at home

Common question

Question: I don't know whether my father can get help to stay at home or if he would be better cared for if he moved to an aged care home. How is the decision made?
Answer: The 'Where to Start' part of the website provides information to help you understand what aged care options are available and what services may be suitable for your needs - from needing a little bit of help that may be available from Home and Community Care Services (more information), to having support to stay in your own home and the options of receiving more complex and coordinated care packages (more information) that are available, through to needing the extra care that is available in an aged care home. In some circumstances, having an aged care assessment  (more information) will help in making decisions. You and your father might like to speak to his doctor first about whether he needs an aged care assessment, or you can contact an assessment team directly.
