Common question

Question: My mother is now a war widow and is already in an age care home. Do her entitlements change and who does she need to tell? Will DVA contact her?
Answer: A war widow's pension will be paid if the veteran's death is determined to have been caused by war or eligible defence service. A pension will be granted automatically if the veteran was an ex-prisoner of war, receiving a disability pension at the special rate (T&PI), receiving extreme disability adjustment or a disability pension at an increased rate due to being a double amputee. Where a veteran has died as a result of a disability already accepted as being caused by war or eligible defence service, the death will be determined to be war or defence caused. In these circumstances a claim for pension still needs to be lodged with the Department of Veterans' Affairs. There may be some adjustment to your mother's daily care fee and income-tested fee depending on whether she is currently receiving an income support payment or becomes eligible for an income support payment in addition to a War Widow's payment.
