This number can provide a link to a wide range of community, aged care and support services that are available locally and nationally. The experienced workers who answer the phone can provide you with free and confidential information on:
- community aged care services to help you stay safely in your home
- these may include domestic assistance, home maintenance and modification, personal care, delivered meals and nursing care – you can also find out about these services using the Community Services Finder on this site
- your local Aged Care Assessment Team
- to access most government-funded aged care you first have to be assessed by health professionals called Aged Care Assessment Teams (ACATs) – you can also get contact details for your nearest ACAT using the ACAT Finder on this site
- carer support and respite services
- these services help carers with options to take a break through short-term and emergency respite (based on assessed need) and provide advice on and coordinate access to respite services in a carer's local area.
Why do we need a national aged care phone number?
On 1 July 2011, a single, national information line was introduced to make it easier for older Australians, their families, and carers to access information about aged care. The new number–1800 200 422–along with improvements being made to the national aged care website–www.agedcareaustralia.gov.au–are the first steps in the implementation of a new 'front end' for aged care.The reform is supported by investment of $36.8 million to improve information, intake and assessment and make it easier, not harder, to access the aged care system. It is part of the Australian Government’s national health reform efforts to build a nationally consistent and integrated aged care system.
The new national number and updated website are the first steps towards meaningful reform to simplify access for people needing aged care services. Further steps in the reform process will be developed in the context of the Australian Government’s response to Productivity Commission’s final report into the aged care system.
By implementing the new front end in stages, the Government is allowing time for service providers, care recipients and carers to adjust to the changes and be involved in the development of later stages. It means having sensible steps towards reform and continued opportunities to talk with people about how to roll out the later stages.
