The decision to live in an aged care home will probably bring mixed emotions for you, your family and your friends. That’s why we’ve devoted a whole section of our website to help you explore your options and included information on costs, responsibilities of providers and services that can help.

Your first step

Your first step is to organise an assessment by an Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT or ACAS in Victoria) (more information), who are required to approve any government-funded places at aged care homes. You can go to our section on ACATs for more information.

Who provides care & services?

To receive Australian Government subsidies for providing aged care, an aged care home must be operated by an organisation that has been approved by the Australian Government (an ‘Approved Provider’) and must have an allocation of ‘places’ which entitles the provider to subsidy payments in respect of care recipients occupying those places.

Cost

If you have been assessed and approved (more information) as needing care in an aged care home, the Australian Government may contribute to the cost of your accommodation and care. The amount that you will need to pay will depend on your assets and income.
